Customers frequently express concerns about gel manicures potentially damaging their nail beds. Despite these concerns, the appeal of aesthetically pleasing gel nails continues to attract them. Is it feasible to prevent such damage, or is it the frequency of gel manicures that affects the nail bed?
I am a firm advocate for gel polish and have been using it since its introduction in Singapore. I strongly believe that, when removed properly and formulated with quality ingredients, gel polish does not harm the nail bed and provides long-lasting color.
Various factors can contribute to soft and peeling nail beds.
Improper removal techniques for gel polish. Excessive drilling and the use of high-speed drill machines not only remove the color but also damage the nail surface. I always utilize a low speed to remove the color and then employ a file to eliminate any remaining base coat or retain it as a protective layer. Certain international gels use a thick, hard gel that necessitates more time for removal. Patience is crucial when removing gel. Some customers mistakenly assume that removal should be swift, but quicker removal demands higher drill speeds. I consistently choose the safest approach. Initially, I file the surface with either a file or drill machine to roughen it, then wrap it with cotton wool soaked in a removal gel solution. After 5 minutes, I proceed with removal using the drill, which is faster and causes less damage as the drilling time is minimized.
Tearing off gel polish is extremely harmful to the nail surface. It is recommended to visit a nail salon for professional removal. Allow a professional to assist you to ensure the health of your nail bed, which will enhance the durability of the gel polish.
